Weaving Hope Project

The Origin of Hope

Weaving Hope debuted in North East neighborhood of Los Angeles in May 2021 as my artistic solution to pressing issues facing our society: the eroding sense of trust and solidarity, the overwhelming feelings of isolation and outrage, and the fear for our common future due to climate change. These are the thoughts that guided my design of the tapestry and the project.

“Weaving Hope” at Alhambra City

At 12 feet wide, the tapestry allows people to interact with one another AND the tapestry while still maintaining safe distance. Participants not only get to express themselves, but also to learn from others’ self-expression. The making of the tapestry also up-cycled over 20 pounds of textile and material remainders that would have gone to landfill.

Every iteration of Weaving Hope takes a whole village: from funders to local organizers to volunteers. The project has provided much more than an art installation and activity to the communities it visited. It has provided opportunities for over 200 local youths, artists and artisans to connect with their local art non-profits and galleries, while bolstering civic engagement and neighborhood trust in local coalitions.

For me, personally, it has literally remade and restored my own hope in my art, in humanity, and in our future together.

The Journey Of Hope

Weaving Hope is now traveling to different cities in Los Angeles County and beyond to continue its mission. In October 2021, supported by the Alhambra’s local art council, it travels to Alhambra City to open the city’s Autumn Festival and welcome hundreds of local residents back to city-wide cultural events after a long hiatus due to the pandemic.

In late December 2021, the project has been awarded the 2021-22 grant from Eastside Arts Initiative to bring its message of hope to Southeast LA (SELA) communities.

In late 2022, the project visited the west side of Los Angeles County with a public art installation project titled “High Hopes” commissioned by the Art of Recovery by city of Santa Monica. Then in June 2023, Weaving Hope celebrated Pride month at Plummer Park in the city of West Hollywood as part of the “Art On the Outside” cultural grant program.
